Overview
IISER Kolkata is committed to ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder deserving students from pursuing world-class scientific education and research. The Students' Affairs Office, in coordination with the Academic Office and national funding agencies, offers a variety of scholarships, fellowships, and financial support schemes.
Students enrolled in the BS-MS, MS, IPhD, and PhD programmes are eligible for various national and institutional funding opportunities based on merit, academic performance, and financial need.
KVPY & INSPIRE Fellowships
A significant portion of BS-MS students at IISER Kolkata are supported through prestigious national fellowships:
DST INSPIRE Scholarship
Offered by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India, to eligible students pursuing natural sciences. Selected candidates receive a monthly stipend along with a summer research mentorship grant.
KVPY Fellowship
Students selected through Kishor Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) continue to receive their fellowship as per DST norms during their study at the institute.
Institute Support & Fee Concessions
IISER Kolkata provides dedicated financial assistance and fee relief schemes for students from economically weaker sections (EWS) and reserved categories:
- Tuition Fee Waiver: SC/ST students enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are exempted from paying tuition fees as per Government of India guidelines.
- Student Aid Fund (SAF): Need-based emergency financial assistance and short-term interest-free loans are provided to students facing sudden financial hardships.
- State & Central Portal Scholarships: Assistance is provided for applying to National Scholarship Portal (NSP), Post-Matric Scholarships, and various state government welfare schemes.
PMRF & Research Fellowships
For doctoral and post-doctoral scholars, robust financial support is provided through national competitive fellowships:
Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF): Exceptional PhD scholars at IISER Kolkata are awarded the prestigious PMRF fellowship, which includes an attractive monthly stipend (up to ₹80,000) and an annual research contingency grant of ₹2 Lakhs.
CSIR-NET / UGC-JRF / DBT / ICMR / GATE: Doctoral candidates holding valid JRF qualifications from CSIR, UGC, ICMR, DBT, or DST-INSPIRE receive monthly fellowships and contingency support directly from respective funding agencies.
